Unearthed Conceptual Speedpaints by ButterscotchWM Unearthed Conceptual Speedpaints by ButterscotchWM
So this is just a little compilation of a bunch of photoshop paintings I did over break that's related to my original story idea called Unearthed. I'm not really gonna reveal too much about it, cuz I don't want people stealing ideas and stuff, you know ^^; But I just wanted to share my art.

I got a bunch of reverence photos online through google images and looking around on tumblr. I got the idea for the giant crystal cavern from a real life place, actually. You can read about it here: [link] I saw a documentary about it on NatGeo and... yeah it was pretty inspiring to me haha! :XD:

So yup. There it is. Enjoy!

DUDE. These are amazing. All the texture and use of colors and . . . bahhh. :iconiloveitmoreplz:

Alright, I think my question is THIS: . . . so, I know that in your story you have this sort of plague/infection thing going on. Does it also negatively affect their environment, or just the living creatures (okay, so the environment's also living, but you know what I mean, LOL) on the surface world? Maybe both? Are you going for like . . . an abandoned, yet septic kind of world above? . . . or is it just the fact that it's so abandoned that makes it really offsetting, and hints to there being a plague? :O_o:

You know what? I really do want to make at least certain areas of the environment to look... sickly. Because I was thinking that the plague originated from the environment somehow. Idk. I tried to make the forest look sickly in 3rd one, and I know that all the infected plant life is going to be red.

I just... dont know what the sickly environment should look like :iconwthplz: It needs to have a certain, recognizable look that says, "Yes, this is what happened to our world."

Oh my GOD.

How did I NOT see this in my newsfeed? DUDE, THESE ARE FUCKING AMAZING. The sense of color scheme, the perspective, the composition-- everything looks so professional and just really, really NICE!

I really wanted to take the conceptual illustration class my school offers that does things like this, but unfortunately the professor that taught that class either quit or got fired. Which SUCKS because he taught a bunch of other classes too! Like Constructive Animal Anatomy for Creature Design and Fantasy Illustration. I think they're gonna give his classes to the other Sequential professors, which I REALLY hope they do, because the Concept Art class was the one I was really looking forward to. D:

I am REALLY digging the one with the rays of sun light peeking through the tree foliage. That's a nice touch. And the bottom two remind me of the concept art for The Incredibles. Out of curiosity, what brushes do you use? Do you make your own or download ones off sites or do you just use the stock ones?

Oh really?? ^^; Thank you!! I didn't think they were that great, cuz I'm not the best at painting. But some of them did turn out pretty well.

Dang you guys have a lot of cool classes! I don't think we have as many conceptual classes as you guys. They kinda just shove all the conceptual stuff into a couple classes, like Conceptual Storytelling and Character and Object Design. We do, however, have a lot of technical classes such as Digital Ink and Paint and Life Drawing and Anatomy. Ai is such a business-driven school, though.

Well, I have downloaded some dirt/grunge like brushes. I'm not sure where I got them and when I used them... but I mostly just paint with the standard, default brush on photoshop set to slightly opaque. And then for the bottom two I just made selection shapes using the lasso tool and just filling them in.

It's the Sequential department. PFFT. A lot of professors are out of the box, and they invent some out-of-the-box electives and stuff.

Yeah, that's what I do too. Make selections with the lasso tool and use the regular brush with low opacity and flow. Do you build up the value in grayscale first or do you just go straight into color? :O_o: I feel like I really need to work on color palettes. I go too crazy with the coloring and it ends up looking just... all over the place and not uniform at all.

I feel like I need to download or make some gritty brushes. :XD: Ahhh, I wish I had time to do more painting. Right now I'm taking Materials and Techniques for Sequential Art and Environments and Props for backgrounds. So I'm working on two projects right now that are do Monday and Tuesday, and one is a drawing of a creepy house in Savannah and the other is a drawing of my favorite monster. The prompts were so... so vague. I can't just draw something and not have a freaking concept behind it, so for the house I used some of the info I've gotten about ghosts and stuff (like how people would cement broken glass to their roof or paint the ceiling or their porch blue or put the window frames on upside down to keep ghosts and bad spirits away) and I'm going to color the ceiling of the porch blue and leave the rest in grayscale and have some... spirit looking things floating next to the house because they can't get in. And for the monster, I don't really have a favorite monster, but I was terrified of mummies as a kid, so I'm drawing an egyptian burial chamber with a mummified child who's come to life, sitting in his tomb, bored out of his mind because he's stuck there and can't go outside.

I feel like I'm in over my head. Pfft. But then, I look at my roommate who's doing 2D animation classes right now, and I'm like... "THIS ISN'T SO BAD." :XD:

That's kinda cool XD I remember you saying something about a "Head Construction Class" or something. :o That's like... a REALLY specific class, lol!

Well, when it comes to painting things, I can't just guess which colors are the correct ones to use or not. Cuz like you said, I end up using a lot of different colors and it looks all over the place and stuff. So what I do is I just find photos on google that resemble the kind of colors and lighting I want in my painting and I just pull the colors from there ^^; Idk is that cheating, or being resourceful? lol!

Oh my gosh, your projects sound fun :lmao: I had no idea people did that to their houses to keep the bad spirits out! That's so weird! Where did you hear that?

Aww the mummy kid... that's adorable. Will you be putting these things on dA for us to see?

OMG I'm doing a 2D animation class right now.... DX WHICH REMINDS ME. I need to find a 30 second audio clip cuz for our midterm project we need a 30 second animation :iconwthplz:..... Jesus take the wheel.
alyn-art Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2013  Student Artist
I know! :lmao: I think it was a small class though. Just an elective.

Oh, that's really cool. :O_o: No, I don't think it's cheating, it's being resourceful. Always use resources. LOL
I might have to try that one day. XD;

I heard it from my professor. And it's true! You can walk around downtown Savannah and if you look at some of the older houses, the porch ceilings will be blue or they'll have broken glass cemented to the roof or the top of a wall. And I think there's maybe one house here that literally has upside-down windows. :lmao:

I might. I usually don't put up my school work, but mainly because I'm ashamed of it. Lmao But these are turning out pretty decent, so I might put them up.

Dude, animation is my passion, like... like working on SOMETHING to do with animation (not actually the animating part, but background work) but those classes literally scare me. I tried working with Maya once and my brain was like, "LOLNOPE." And 2D? Hell no, I don't have nearly enough patience to do that. At all.

I was going to major in animation until I took some workshops and realized I hate animating. :XD: But I still want to work on the process part of it, just more like... storyboards, concept art, or character designs. That's why I'm in sequential art.

But because I'm in that department, I have to learn a lot about comic books. Which I don't mind, it's just not what I'm interested in.
